How Section 8 works
Section 8, or the Housing Choice Voucher program, is a program which provides rental assistance to low income individuals and families. A federally funded program, administered nationally by HUD (department of Housing and Urban Development) program participants normally pay 30% of monthly adjusted income towards rent and utilities – the housing authority pays the balance of the rent to the landlord.
The Chelmsford Housing Authority administers the Section 8 program for Chelmsford and surrounding communities that do not have a local authority administering Section 8. We offer a local preference for Chelmsford, Tyngsboro, Groton, Dracut, Westford, Carlisle, Lowell, Littleton, Townsend and Dunstable.
We have 361 standard vouchers and 75 mainstream disabled vouchers, both tenant based and project based. Currently, our programs are 100% leased.
